Mary V. (Hines) Turnpaugh passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, in Danville, Illinois, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 18, 1925, in Casey County, Kentucky, Mary led a life marked by devotion to her family, faith, and a steadfast independence that defined her character throughout her 101 years.
A graduate of Williamsport High School in 1943, Mary married the love of her life, Harold G. Turnpaugh on November 25th of the same year. Together, they built a life filled with love and cherished memories.
Mary was a woman of many passions and talents. She was an avid reader who found joy in the written word and excelled as a wonderful cook, delighting those around her with her culinary skills. She was most famous for her delicious pies. Outside on the farm was where she felt most at home, embracing the outdoors with enthusiasm. Her competitive spirit was evident in her love of bowling and playing pinochle. Singing also brought her great happiness, reflecting her vibrant personality and deep connection to faith and family. Mary also had a zest for life beyond the home and farm. She enjoyed traveling to southern states with Harold and was known to celebrate her milestones with trips to the casino, including memorable celebrations for her 100th and 101st birthdays.
Her family was her pride and joy. Mary is survived by her daughters Bettie Scott (Chuck) and Janet Fox. She also leaves behind six grandchildren: Mitzi Fox, Rick (Kim) Fox, Alan Scott, Susan (Jeff) Fauver, Shelley (Jim) Melle, and Jill Walker; fifteen great-grandchildren: Justin (Ashley) Scott, Charissa Scott, Kimberly Setser, Clayton Fauver, Colton (Courtney) Fauver, Jeremy (Miriam) Watson, Dylan (Graci) Scott, Dalton Fox, Katurah (Bryce) Scott, Caleb (Abby) Fauver, Zachary Fox, Linzi (Caine) Wilson, Kylee (Caleb) Elliott, Eric Watson, and Ana Scott; and fourteen great-great-grandchildren: Alaina Longoria, Aleah Longoria, Brianna Elliott, Wesley Elliott, Charlotte Watson, Juliette Watson, Nellie Fauver, Rylan Scott, Beckett Scott, Aurora Scott, Ariel Scott, Ava Benayoun, Atlas Watson, and Lyla Wilson who carry forward her legacy of love and resilience. She was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Harold Turnpaugh, her six siblings: Ned, Mazie, Oral, Ezra, Earl, and Christine; son-in-law Michael J. Fox, and her parents, George H. Hines and Nellie Elliott Hines.
The funeral service for Mary will be conducted at 12:00 p.m.,(EST) on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Grady Funeral Home, Williamsport. Burial will immediately follow at West Lebanon Cemetery. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. for the showing and the funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m.
