Larry Daniel Shafer

Larry Daniel Shafer, 83 of Pine Village Indiana passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 26th 2025 at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana.

Larry was born on February 10th, 1942, in Lafayette, IN and was the son of Joseph Daniel Shafer and Oma (Roberts) Shafer Booth. He grew up in Pine Village, graduating in 1960 from PVHS and immediately started farming full time. He did have a head start; at 16 he received daily permission from principal Mr. Horn to be released early from school during planting and harvesting season. He married his high school sweetheart Connie Ice on July 16th, 1961 at the Pine Village Methodist Church. They were married for 64 years.

Larry was a devoted father and grandfather, attending all of DeeDee and Lisa’s cheering and track events, and repeated this love and energy with his grandchildren at Seeger High School. He really loved his backhoe! He’d tear up 6 acres to put in either a flowerbed or remove a stump, reasoning that “The backhoe got away from me!” and would dig you a pond at your request. He’d also spend hours in his shop tinkering with yard equipment and building birdhouses.

Larry worked as a fire and safety inspector for 32 years at Purdue University, educating residence hall students how to protect themselves and inspected all protective devices in and around the campus, and spent many a chilly evening at Ross-Ade Stadium or a sweaty afternoon at Mackey Arena in uniform, helping protect attendees of Boilermaker events.

Larry will be sadly missed by wife Connie of Pine Village, daughters Deanna (DeeDee) Shafer-Rater and Lisa Shafer-Wagner both of Pine Village, son-in law Chan Wagner, grandchildren Makayla (Brady) Cushman of Otterbein, Jake Rater of Indianapolis, Morgan Wagner (fiance Tre Stapleton) of Pine Village, Janelle Rater (fiance Buddy Poynter) of Pine Village, and sister Mary Hardaway of Attica, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Joe Lee.

A memorial service for Larry will be held at the Pine VIllage Bible Church, 106 Church St  in Pine Village, with visitation from 11:00 AM until memorial service time at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 4th, with the service starting at 1:00PM, Pastor Kristi Mitchell officiating.

Instead of flowers, the family kindly and respectfully requests that any donations in Larry’s name be made out to the Pine Village Bible Church.
