Ilene Frances Smith

Ilene Smith, 91, of West Lebanon, Indiana, passed away, Monday, May 18, 2026, in Lafayette, Indiana. She was born March 21, 1935, to Elbert Alderson and Frances Billings Conner at her home in Danville, Illinois. Ilene was united in marriage to Kenneth J. Smith on December 6, 1950, in Watseka, Illinois. Shortly after they were married, Kenneth went to Japan during the Korean conflict, she stayed with her grandparents until he returned to West Lebanon where they made their home.

Ilene was the beloved mother to her children, who remember her not only as being a loving mother but also as a woman of remarkable interests and abilities. Her legacy is carried forward by her extensive family, including 8 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply loved.

A culinary enthusiast, Ilene often found inspiration in Good Housekeeping magazine, where her cooking and recipes were celebrated. She also appeared in the magazine for one of her wonderful recipes. Her love for the culinary arts was matched by her skill in painting, crocheting, knitting, and quilting, each a testament to her creativity and patience. Ilene also worked as a journalist for the Danville Commercial News in her younger years and was a devoted member of West Lebanon Christian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and played both the piano and organ.

Ilene's adventurous spirit took her to many places, with trips to North Myrtle Beach, England and Europe holding a special place in her heart. These journeys were not just travels but opportunities to explore new worlds and create lasting memories. Ilene made lifelong friends throughout the world through letters. She had the opportunity to meet a lifelong pen pal during one of her trips to England.

Ilene's life was filled with love for her family and a passion for storytelling through her work as a journalist. Her family, friends, and all who knew her will fondly remember her for the warmth she brought into their lives and the legacy of love and creativity she leaves behind.

Ilene is survived by her loving husband Kenneth of 75 years, Her children, Kenja (the late Gordon) Wesley, Doug (Missy) Smith, Dana (Robin) Smith, 8 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, her sister, Carolyn Schlorff, along with several nieces and nephews.

Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, and her youngest daughter Valleri Smith.

Graveside services for Ilene will be held at West Lebanon Cemetery on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Bruce Thornsbrough officiating.
