Icie Cumie James, 88, of Otterbein, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2026. She was born on June 4, 1938, in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, the cherished daughter of Johnny and Cordelia Burks Brown.
Icie dedicated her life to caring for her family as a homemaker, a role she embraced with love, care, and creativity. She found great joy in flower gardening, nurturing beauty and tranquility around her home. She was also an avid bird watcher, delighting in the simple wonders of nature. Icie enjoyed crocheting and crafting, and she especially enjoyed making hats and blankets for children in the hospital.
On July 15, 1997, Icie married Jesse “Mike” James in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Together, they shared a loving life until his passing.
Icie is survived by her sons, Richard (Maxine) Jonas and Raymond (Cindy) Jonas; her step-daughter, Joyce (Bob) Hanselman; five grandchildren, Whitney Hanselman, Joseph White, Seth Jonas, Zachary Hicks, and Dakoda Jonas; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Cordelia Burks Brown; her husband, Jesse “Mike” James; her brothers, Everett Brown, Eldridge Brown, Hubert Brown, Cordell Brown, Clebert Brown, and Evins Brown; and her sister, Maggie Cantrell.
Icie will be lovingly remembered for her devotion to her family, her love of nature, and her creative spirit. Her kindness, talents, and love will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A visitation for Icie will be held at Grady Funeral Home on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Rainsville Cemetery in Attica, Indiana.
