Ronald Dean “Ike” Benting, age 65 of Portland Arch, died at his residence at 11:20 am EDT on Thursday, May 14, 2009 after a 2 week battle with cancer. Ron was born on March 2, 1944 in St. Joseph, IL. He was the son of Ben and Tena (Hayn) Benting. He graduated from East Lynn High School. Ron lived in Danville, IL before moving to Portland Arch where he has resided since 1980. On November 18, 1978 he married Dorie Johnson in Danville, IL. She survives. Ron served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam Era. He worked in maintenance and as a boiler operator for Danville Area Community College for 25 years. He attended Bethel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and going antiquing at flea markets. He also enjoyed attending auctions at Calhoun’s in Danville, IL. He especially enjoyed playing poker with his brother and uncles. Surviving with his wife, Dorie, are, father, Ben Benting of Covington, IN; 2 sons, Todd Benting of Delong, IL and Ron Roberts (fiancée: Jen) of Lincoln, IL; brothers and sisters, Marilyn Bracken (husband: Wayne) of Covington, Beverly Padgett (husband: Lonny) of Danville, IL, Mervin Benting (wife: Georgia) of St. Joseph, IL, Roger Benting of Champaign, IL; mother-in-law, June Johnson of Danville, IL; 3 grandchildren, William Tuttle, Johnathon Tischer, and Bethlynn Tischer; several aunts and uncles; and special friends, Ron and Judy Lockhart of Attica,IN and Nel Tischer of Attica, IN. Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Tena Benting, infant son, Brian Dean Benting, and father-in-law, Wilford Johnson. Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Monday, May 18, 2009 from 11:00 am EDT until service time at 1:00 pm EDT with Rev. Zachary Rainey officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Danville, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to offset funeral expenses.
