Alvin C. "Sarge" York

Alvin C. “Sarge” York, age 80 of rural Williamsport, went home in the arms of our Lord to be in the arms of his Rene girl at 9:27 a.m., Monday, December 15, 2008 at The Waters of Williamsport. Sarge was born in January 21, 1928 in Oxford, OH. He was the son of Lee and Gersie (McNally) York. He attended schools in Bismarck, IL. He served in the Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. On October 15, 1960 he married his soul mate, LaRayne M. Laurent in Clinton, IN. She preceded him in death on May 4, 2003. He will be rejoicing in heaven singing Christmas carols and spending Christmas with his Rene girl this year. Sarge moved to the Williamsport area in 1975. He had worked for Aleth Prouty, Elton Wagner Trucking and retired from Holland Trucking. Music was Sarge’s life. He played music from the time he was a child. He and his brothers were known as the Happy Valley Boys and did radio programs with their father on WITY and WHOW. His Aunt Louise also played with them. They entertained many people singing and playing musical instruments. Sarge mastered the electric guitar and the mandolin. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW, the American Legion, NRA, Musicians Union, Teamsters Local #26 and Retiree’s Club. He never met a stranger and always had a story to tell, referring to himself as “this old geezer”. He loved Chet Atkins’ music. Surviving are, Brother, James (wife: Lois) York of West Lebanon Numerous nieces and nephews Sarge was preceded in death by his wife, LaRayne, brother, Charles York, and aunt, Louise Daughtery whom he thought of as a sister. Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in West Lebanon on Friday, December 19, 2008 from noon until service time at 1:00 p.m. EST. Interment will be at West Lebanon Cemetery.
